What we do
Exploring solar power
Sunlight is abundant across South Asia. Meridian East Energy is exploring solar generation as a complement to hydropower, with close attention to land use, grid capacity and local demand.
Why solar alongside hydropower
Solar panels generate during daylight hours, often when demand from businesses and public services is high. Hydropower can continue through the evening and in the wetter months. Planned together, the two can make clean electricity available for more of the day and more of the year.
Solar can also be built in stages and in a range of sizes, which allows a project to be matched to the needs and capacity of a particular place.
Where solar can fit
The options we are assessing include ground-mounted installations on suitable land, systems on commercial and public buildings, and solar sited alongside other energy infrastructure. Each depends on the location, the grid connection available and the needs of the people the electricity would serve.
Current stage
Our solar work is exploratory. We are not publishing capacities, sites or operating dates at this stage. Confirmed proposals will be published with their stage and supporting information.
What a responsible solar proposal must address
- Sunlight and output Measured solar resource and realistic generation through the year.
- Land and food Avoiding conflict with farming, forests and other valuable land uses.
- Grid capacity Whether the local network can accept the power, and on what terms.
- Storage Whether batteries or pairing with hydropower are needed to match supply and demand.
- Heat and weather Performance in high temperatures, monsoon rain and coastal conditions.
- Local benefit How a project can support local employment and reliable supply nearby.
- End of life Responsible repowering, recycling and site restoration.
- Cost Whether the electricity can be delivered at a fair, stable price.
